This October, the international spotlight shines on Los Angeles as over 60 cultural institutions come together to celebrate the birth of postwar art in LA; a time when LA-based artists radically transformed the art scene. The highways and byways of the Southland will connect through visual arts venues as they simultaneously present art made in LA during the four decades in which LA emerged as a major force in the art world.

The On Location program challenges filmmakers to showcase the many attributes of Los Angeles in four minutes or less. After reviewing numerous submissions, 22 finalists premiered their films on May 21, 2011 at Sunset Gower Studios.

Tens of thousands of people across California spent the past weekend cleaning, fixing, and painting. The three day volunteer event called Big Sunday has been held every year since 1999. But many Californians say there was an even greater need for volunteers this year because of the economic recession. Elizabeth Lee visited some work sites in Los Angeles to find out how the event is helping local communities.

​What was it like in L.A. on this day in 1992. Scary. Very scary. And sad. You felt like the social contract had fallen apart. The Korean term for the L.A. riots is actually April 29 (Sa-i-Gu).

USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism’s Intersections South LA community news site today looks back 19 years and finds area residents who lived through the riots.

Jay Leno takes us on a tour of LA below as he cruises famed Mulholland Drive in his Mercedes SLS AMG and heads down to Sunset Boulevard. The road was named after William Mulholland, the head engineer who oversaw the construction of the massive aqueduct that brought water and subsequent growth to the city after being completed in 1913.
Leno compares Mulholland Drive to the Nurburgring, a motorsport race track around the village of Nurburg, Germany. Simply known as “The Ring” by enthusiasts, it is widely considered the toughest, most dangerous and most demanding purpose-built race track in the world.

This Disney-made video on the origin of the California Institute of the Arts was made when the Music Center and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art were still being talked about and designed. Narrated by Sebastian Cabot, it includes rare footage of the Chouinard Art Institute near MacArthur Park and the Los Angeles Conservatory of Music, which were merged to form CalArts in 1961, under the guidance of Walt and Roy Disney. (The new school didn’t move to Valencia until 1971.) It was posted to Vimeo by Christine Ziemba.
