168 hours — is the amount of time you have each and every week. Laura Vanderkam, author of the brand new book, “168 Hours: You Have More Time Than You Think.” wants to help us spend our 168 hours doing things we love.

Students from elite American university look for ways to help others

Friday, May 28th, 2010

It’s college graduation season in the United States.

Even in today’s weak economy, students from prestigious Ivy League universities like Harvard have an extra advantage on the road to financial success. However, not everyone in Harvard College’s Class of 2010 is striving for a lucrative career.

Graduation is just days away, and Robin Mount is even busier than usual.

The director of Harvard’s Office of Career Services is matching her students with the right employers and career opportunities, often in the fields of education, international development and public service.

“A lot of our students want to work in orphanages, micro-finance projects, AIDS [care] delivery ‘on the ground,’ global public health,” she says. Continue reading here

@Googletalks: How Global Universities are Reshaping the World?

Friday, May 28th, 2010

The Great Brain Race tells the story of the transformation of the global academic landscape in recent years. Nearly 3 million students now study outside their home nations; globe-trotting faculty hop from the United States to Singapore to Saudi Arabia; Western universities create branch campuses in the Middle East and Asia; and new or rejuvenated research universities in China, South Korea, Europe, and beyond vie with American giants for the top spots in global education rankings.

Wildavsky’s book makes the case that, despite worries about heightened university competition and an ever-fiercer race for talent, the globalization of higher education should be welcomed, not feared. That’s because increasing knowledge is not a zero-sum game: the unhindered movement of people and ideas around the globe has enormous economic and intellectual benefits for individuals, for nations, and for the world.

There are literally hundreds if not thousands of little things we can do to raise the bar in our professional and personal lives. So many of these things are easy to do and can be accomplished in less than 10 seconds. They just require an intentional effort.

What is CRITICAL to understand is that your ultimate success, fulfillment and happiness will come from doing the little things that matter.

See a few highlights below:

1.  Make comfortable eye contact- your eyes send messages; establishing and maintaining eye contact with people demonstrates confidence, respect, and genuine interest.

2.  Offer a proper handshake- a good, firm handshake demonstrates confidence and makes a good impression.

3.  Speak with life and energy in your voice- no one likes to be around people who are “dead, dull and lifeless.”

4.  Walk with a bounce in your step- it’s evidence of an energetic attitude that ultimately leads to success.

How to say it all without words?

Saturday, May 22nd, 2010

You’re walking into a party, and although you look utterly fabulous, you get nervous as you step inside and realize you don’t know anyone other than the host.

You sit on the couch in the middle of the room, cross your arms and legs and as people pass, you give them a closed mouth smile. Why the heck isn’t anyone coming up to talk to you? You look great and friendly, right?
Your hair and outfit may be making everyone want to come say hi, but your body language is telling them to stay away.

It’s crazy how influential body language is! Going clubbing, coming to a new class and definitely attending an interview, you want not only what you’re saying with your words but what you’re saying with your body to let people know that you are the coolest, most confident person.
