China extends brain drain campaign to young scientists
Friday, October 22nd, 2010China is set to expand its ambitious scheme to attract the cream of the scientific diaspora back to the country so it includes young scientists as well.
Li Zhiyong, vice-minister of the Organisation Department of the Central Committee, told a conference of the High-level Overseas Talents and National Development Strategy in Beijing last month (28 September) that under-35-year-olds will be targeted to return to China. This issue was also a focus of discussions at the conference organised by the Western Returned Scholars Association (WRSA).
China’s Medium- and Long-Term Talent Development Plan (2010–2020), which was announced earlier this year, involves offering resources to established scientists from the United States or Europe who return to China under a scheme known as the Qianren plan, or Thousand Talent Plan.
Although the budget is unknown, each scientist who works under the Qianren scheme has received one million Chinese Yuan (US$150,000) in settlement support from the government.

Promote Yourself without Being Self-Promotional
Thursday, October 21st, 2010Explaining why someone should hire you, or introduce you to a friend who is hiring, can be uncomfortable.
You need to sell yourself, but you don’t want to sound like a salesperson.
Instead of detailing what’s so great about you, tell a story that covers the following:
Situation. Explain the problem or situation that you, your unit, or your company faced.
Tasks. Outline what your responsibility was in solving the problem.
Achievements. Make clear what you did to meet your responsibility.
Results. What happened as a result of your achievements? Did revenues increase? Did customer satisfaction improve? Use specific examples to pique your audience’s interest.

Bilingualism good for the brain
Monday, October 18th, 2010Bilingual education is controversial in the United States, but a growing body of research shows that regularly speaking two languages comes with certain types of improved mental performance. The longer a person has spoken two or more languages, the greater the cognitive effects.
Speaking two or more languages appears to enhance executive function — the ability to focus on the information needed to complete a task. Bilinguals with Alzheimer’s disease retained brain function longer than those who spoke only one language.

Do Something
Thursday, October 14th, 2010I was reading an article named The 4 Traits That Make Generation Y Awesome, when I came across this great organization called Do Something.org.
DoSomething.org is one of the largest organizations in the U.S. that helps young people rock causes they care about. A driving force in creating a culture of volunteerism, DoSomething.org is on track to activate two million young people in 2011. By leveraging the web, television, mobile, and pop culture, DoSomething.org inspires, empowers and celebrates a generation of doers: teenagers who recognize the need to do something, believe in their ability to get it done, and then take action.
Volunteer opportunities just for you, just put in your zip code to get started.

What do you think? Do you feel inspired to do something or to take action? Let us know.
5 Success Tips for the Net Generation
Wednesday, October 13th, 2010We believe these five great tips will definitively inspire you and help you succeed in your career path.
These ideas are shared by Alexandra Levit, who is a Workplace and Gen Y Speaker, Author, & Expert.
Here are some excerpts.
1-Focus on acquiring transferable skills. You have all the time in the world to get promoted and have the responsibility of a senior executive. Enjoy not having to take care of anyone but yourself and focus on acquiring skills like project management, budgeting, sales, marketing, and client relations.
2-Use your initiative one small contribution at a time. Rather than insisting on changing the company overnight, identify areas where you can improve upon a product or process and make your suggestions selectively. Once one idea is well received and implemented successfully, you can move on.
