New Citizens Look Forward to July 4th Celebration

Tuesday, June 29th, 2010

The Fourth of July is America’s birthday, celebrated with parades, fireworks and family get-togethers. It commemorates July 4, 1776, when the nation’s founders cut their ties to Britain to become a separate nation. For new citizens, the day has a special meaning, as VOA’s Mike O’Sullivan learned at a recent ceremony in Los Angeles, where thousands of immigrants were sworn in as citizens.

According to American Family Traditions, being citizens of the United of American means : “We are citizens in that we owe allegiance to our Government and in return our Government owes us protection. As good Citizens we contribute our personal time to our American Society, our local Community and our Friends and Neighbors. We vote, pay our taxes, and follow the law. We ensure the security of our Neighborhoods and Work Places. We volunteer our time to good causes, we respect the rights of others and demand the same for ourselves. We contribute to those less fortunate who work hard for themselves. We conduct ourselves in accordance with American Family Values and respect everyone’s right to practice their own religion and live as they please. We know and understand our History and live up to the ideals expressed in The Declaration of Independence, Constitution and Bill of Rights.” More here

How I Graduated from Harvard, Turned Down Google, Got a Job On Twitter, And Joined A Startup Called Clicker?

Thursday, June 24th, 2010

Honestly, the hardest part is getting in. But, after four years, I graduated this past May, cap, gown, and my very own Harvard diploma in two. This story, though, starts a few months before then. Like many seniors, I had spent a lot of time trying to figure out what I wanted to do after college. Graduating from Harvard means you can do anything, right? Wrong. It turns out it’s a bit more complicated. Turns out they don’t just hand out awesome, challenging, creative, and entrepreneurial jobs to Harvard grads. What the eff? While most of my friends had faithfully decided they were going to be investment bankers, consultants, or teachers– the only thing I was sure about was that I didn’t want to be any of those three. All I knew was that I wanted a job I’d be excited to wake up for every morning. Continue here

3 Ways to Start Your Overseas Job Transition

Monday, June 21st, 2010

Leaders who go to work overseas are often surprised by how much they thought they knew about a culture, and how little they really do. Here are three ways to begin your cultural transition before you start working or seeking jobs in a different country:

1.    Check your assumptions. You will hear many things about how people in the other culture get work done. Remember that all cultures are nuanced and while generalizations can be descriptive, you can’t accept them as universal rule.
2.    Attend workshops. Leading up to your move, find workshops or lectures about doing business in different countries or go to a country-specific conference.
3.    Immerse yourself in global coverage. Find publications, websites, and television programs that give you a cross-cultural view of what’s going on in the world and insight into how other cultures view global news.

Today’s Management Tip was adapted from “Managing Yourself: Making It Overseas” by Mansour Javidan, Mary Teagarden, and David Bowen.
